Our Mission

Withered Wyvern aims to celebrate the versatility  and evolution of fantasy by bringing together poems and short stories that examine the genre in different ways. This journal aims to showcase the diversity of fantasy, which can take various forms, from typical magical worlds to more complex or unique interpretations. This journal encourages authors to experiment with the genre and explore what fantasy could become rather than describing what it should look like.

The journal’s purpose is to create a welcoming community of writers and readers who are interested in fantasy and creative writing, regardless of their age or background. By showcasing both up-and-coming and established voices, this journal will build a space where diverse perspectives and approaches to fantasy can coexist.

In addition to encouraging contributors to send out a call for submissions to other writers, the journal will mainly publish works by writers who are connected through poetry and creative writing communities. The long-term goal is to keep taking submissions and grow the journal into a continuous platform for authors and readers to explore the vast potential of fantasy.

Sydney is a Psychology Major and an English Minor at Ohio University. Although her academic background spans both psychology and literature, since the age of nine, she has been fascinated by fantasy’s storytelling and its abilities to blur the boundaries between reality and imagination. Sydney is a fantasy writer and poet who believes in the magic of diverse voices and the countless stories waiting to be told. Through Withered Wyvern, she hopes to celebrate the evolving nature of fantasy by developing an inviting community where a variety of voices can experiment with the genre and redefine its possibilities
